Now more than ever, theatre matters for young people

What we are asking for and why?

Right now, young people are being offered a surfeit of online content: zoom meetings with classmates, behind-the-scenes videos and living room performances: but with each rolling minute of screen time we are reminded that, more than ever, there's nothing like a live experience.

Supporters of Monkey Baa have seen first-hand the unfiltered joy, the anticipation, the connection that young people experience in our theatre – often for the first time.
We believe that, as we come out the other side of this crisis, children will need the social and emotional benefits theatre offers more than ever. Theatre gives young people a voice, reflecting their world as they see it and a recent study* has proven that it “develop(s) their ability to imagine the future”.

A proudly not-for-profit company, we always place children at the centre of everything we do and respect the intelligence of our young audiences. During our hibernation, we are continuing to create work for young people in collaboration with some of Australia’s leading artists because we want to be able to bring you and the young people in your life award-winning theatre as soon as possible.

Box office and philanthropic support has always constituted 90% of our operational and creative development funding. This year, with the cancellation of our Edward the Emu premiere and national tour, our Diary of a Wombat US tour and a 2020 season of exceptional theatre for young people at our venue, we have lost a significant portion of our income.

If it is within your means to do so, please make a donation to Monkey Baa today and help safeguard the future of professional live theatre for young people. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Young audiences of today are the future of the arts sector. They will be the audiences, the creators, the champions of the arts tomorrow and the impact of your donation today will be felt for years to come. Thank you for your support.

Organiser statement

You did it! Thank you so much for donating to our appeal. We are overwhelmed with the wonderful messages and hearten by the number of new donors who have rallied behind us: in particular, the number of young philanthropists who have emerged at this crucial time for the sector. With the collapse of our performance income, this philanthropic support is more vital than ever. We are proud to acknowledge our individual donors on our website: https://www.monkeybaa.com.au/support-us/our-supporters/ If you would like to know more about how you can support Monkey Baa please contact our Development Manager Johanna Mulholland development@monkeybaa.com.au Love, the Monkeys xx
