Dismantle is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers dynamic and engaging outreach programs to empower at-risk and disadvantaged young people, helping them rediscover and achieve their ambitions, as well as overcome significant barriers for successful engagement and participation in education, training and/or employment pathways.
Dismantle's mission is to provide young people with enabling support so they can gain the knowledge, thinking skills, attitudes and behaviours to manage their life, learning and work in a positive, self-directed way.
Dismantle is not a funded organisation. It fills the gaps between mainstream services and corrective services, for e.g. schools and police. Often, young people's vulnerability is then only noticed when it's too late - by police or crisis support. Rather than wait for that to happen, Dismantle engages young people when they start to have a tough time, not after it’s too late. Dismantle utilises social enterprise revenue to enable these programs, but internal funding capacity does not yet meet demand.
BikeRescue, Dismantle’s flagship mentoring program, uses bike mechanics as an outreach and engagement tool. By focussing on bikes, BikeRescue Mentors (Youth Workers and Occupational Therapists) build trust and rapport among referred youth, that is used to facilitate learning and therapy workshops. The casual and safe atmosphere enables connection to the root causes of participants’ vulnerability. To date, the program has supported over 1,200 at-risk youth across 110 partners, with a 90% completion rate.
