.... helping bring basic healthcare to more than 1000 people in 13 remote and disadvantaged communities in Sierra Leone, a country with one of the lowest life expectancies and highest maternal and child mortality rates in the world.
Some of the world's most treatable diseases, malaria, diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections, are the most common causes of illness and death, particularly for children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Very basic health services that can treat these conditions alone will save lives, yet no government or NGO services have previously reached these communities.
Set4Life Australia members have a personal connection with the village of Yiben and their local champion, Minkailu Bantama (Mallam). Already, with Mallam's management and guidance, and support from our members, this community has built a primary school that also services the surrounding villages.
Now, as a registered charity, Set4Life Aust is funding a health facility that will enable access to basic services under the national health system. A government standard building has been constructed, again through the efforts of Mallam, a qualified building contractor and almost every member of the community. Toilets, rainwater storage and solar power will complete the first stage of their Community Health Centre - an outpatient clinic that will prioritise maternal and child health. Future plans include extensions to the building and services for inpatients (Stage 2) and a birthing unit (Stage 3).
Set4Life Aust works directly with Mallam and local decision-makers to respond to the local needs. Our members and supporters volunteer their time and efforts and we have no overheads. Every donated dollar goes directly to our projects which are community owned and driven.
We are seeking dedicated sponsors and regular contributors to help us complete the Health Centre and provide ongoing support for health-related development initiated by the community. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible in Australia and even a small amount goes a long way.
