Almost 1 in 4 Australian children start school without the literacy skills required to learn. United Way programs endeavour to change this by providing a holistic approach to school readiness by supporting children, their parents and the community to build a foundation whereby barriers to literacy development are broken down.
The focus of our work, in the early years, is to foster a strong culture of reading and engage parents and the wider community in the importance of books in homes.
One of the ways in which we endeavour to do this is through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL). It is a monthly book distribution program that began in Dolly Parton’s hometown in Tennessee in the US for 0 to 5 year olds.
We're holding a Community Reading Day for the Macquarie Park community to drive community engagement, collect feedback on how we can better support families and continue to promote the importance of early literacy.
More information on the Macquarie Park project can be read here: http://unitedway.com.au/macquarie-business-park-partnership
As a volunteer, you will work along side other corporate partners from the Macquarie Business Park to deliver a fun-filled day while promoting the importance of early literacy.
You will also be assisting us to survey families to better understand how we can support them, prepare and serve morning tea and help us run children's activities!
