GOALS is a structured mentoring program designed to widen the life choices and aspirations of disadvantaged students in Year 9 (approx.14 years old.) Students from disadvantaged areas often have little opportunity to network outside their immediate community and are often lacking in professional role models who can demonstrate or encourage a variety of career options and study pathways. This limited social network combined with financial constraints can result in a higher likelihood of leaving school early.
We are seeking 8 volunteers for this program, including 4 Males + 4 Females. Each student will be gender-matched with a mentor who has shared interests and experiences.
Mentors will work with their student one-on-one during each session, as well as in group activities with other program participants. Content includes topics such as setting goals, communication, realising your strengths and building relationships and confidence.
As a GOALS mentor, there are both personal and professional rewards. It is critical that you attend all sessions of the program unless there are exceptional circumstances. For some students in the program, their mentor may be one of very few positive role models in their lives.
The program starts with a launch held at Kingsgrove North High School on August 17 and is followed by 5 facilitated workshops held in North Ryde (7 Sept, 21 Sept, 26 Oct, 9 Nov, 23 Nov) and lunch will be provided.
You must have a NSW Working with Children check.
