1:2:1 is a basic numeracy and counting program designed for Year 1 primary school children who require assistance with the development and understanding of basic mathematical skills. These students have limited opportunities to build on their numeracy outside of school and would benefit from one-to-one attention with a mentor to help build confidence and self-esteem.
Research shows that students who struggle with basic numeracy often feel they can’t learn and are different from their peers. This can lead to low self-esteem, poor behaviour and potential disengagement from school. Failure to address this issue at primary school level means these challenges may continue into high school and beyond, affecting the student’s future in regard to tertiary education, career pathways and gaining meaningful employment.
The program generally targets students from Year 1, as this year is widely recognised to be a critical point of numeracy development. Participating students have been identified and selected by their school before being matched with a mentor for weekly sessions.
Mentors will be briefed on the program at the launch. All sessions will be held at the school. You have the option of either attending weekly sessions or fortnightly sessions in which case you will 'buddy up' with a colleague to mentor the same student and attend alternate weeks. A key requirement of being a mentor is to act as an important role model in the student’s lives and to mentor them at each of the sessions. For some students participating in the program, their mentors may be the only positive and dependable role model in their lives. It is critical that mentors attend all sessions they have committed to unless there are exceptional circumstances.
