Data collected by health workers in PNG showed the maternal mortality rate to be 7 deaths for every 1000 births. This translates to roughly 6 women dying per day from pregnancy-related problems.
To give this some perspective, in Australia the rate is 7.1 per 100,000 births (100 times less likely).
So why is it so perilous to give birth in PNG? One of the main reasons is simple: access to healthcare.
You can help.
A donation toward the cost of a flight allowed us to reach to Loretta and deliver Steven. Your tax-deductible donation today will allow us to reach someone else tomorrow.
Around three-quarters of the medevacs we perform are related to childbirth.
The people living in these remote communities have no means to pay for this life-saving service. It is only made possible through donations.
As the end of financial year approaches, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the medevac fund in PNG so that we can continue to reach isolated people in their time of need.
