The East Kimberley Aboriginal Awards (EKAAA) is an important and rising star in the nations gala awards calendar of events. Since its inception in 2000, Wunan Foundation and our army of community support, has been building this gala awards night to celebrate and showcase the achievements of Aboriginal people across the East Kimberley.
Achievement is showcased biennially across 14 different award categories and nominations are based on the principle ‘Reward for Effort, acknowledging individuals and organisations for their achievements and contributions to the cultural, social and economic development of Aboriginal people in our region.
It is recognised that Aboriginal people who contribute to their community help to build a stronger communal culture of success and progression in the people around them: this ultimately helps enrich the lives of all those living and working in the region. Showcasing positive Aboriginal success builds confidence and pride, encouraging and empowering Aboriginal achievement and ultimately inspiring community led change.
In keeping with the community friendly character of the event, speakers and entertainers are Aboriginal, and/or have a regional indigenous focus. In 2015, the EKAAA program featured prominent local community members Rowena Alexander and Jamie Elliot as MC’s for the evening, Rhys Bedford, Kerri Leader and Band (entertainment) and the Mirima Traditional Dancers, and an inspirational presentation from keynote presenter, Professor Marcia Langton. The event is attended by a vast array of community individuals, organisations and government officials, both State and Federal.
The 2017 program will continue to support a regional indigenous focus as per previous events. However, this year we want to showcase our awards to the nation and take our event to a whole new level!
If you support achievement, your donation will help a small remote community shine brightly. Our dream is to create an event that will not only showcase local culture and achievements within our regions Aboriginal communities, but to immerse our guests in a captivating and truly unique Kimberley experience. Professional audio visual services, stunning stage and event design, lighting displays and professional production management well help us deliver the Wow factor to take this event to the next level.
As professionals and leaders in your respective industries, particularly those events, audio-visual, event theming and design related professionals, I’m sure you can understand and appreciate how important these elements are and the impact they can have on an event. Your donations will go directly towards the following production areas:
DESIGN:
STAGE BACKDROP - via a local Aboriginal design / art competition, the winning design will be converted into a full size stage backdrop for maximum impact and stunning stage presence.
THEMING ELEMENTS: local Aboriginal groups and artists have been brought together to work on various theming elements such as table overlays, centrepieces and a stunning entrance way. The archway will then be installed within the local township as a public art piece for all to enjoy.
AWARDS BOOKLET – a design by a local Aboriginal artist will used to adorn the awards the booklet.
*Note: a video will be produced upon completion of the event which will include event highlights and highlights from each of the community engagement projects in honour of our communities achievements.
PRODUCTION:
The EKAAA will also be streamed live this year, so as one of the remotest gala awards nights in Australia, please help our region really shine on the national stage. As an events industry professional of 15 years, I hope you will join me to make this the ‘best EKAAA yet’!
We receive tremendous support from our community but it is only small, so your support would be greatly appreciated. Donations are tax deductible.
