Syria’s children have endured appalling suffering throughout the last four years. Nearly 2 million children have fled the country and are now living in over-stretched refugee camps, makeshift shelters or villages. Many have fled Syria on foot, taking only what they could carry. Most fled under the cover of night to avoid sniper fire and shelling. Our staff on the ground have been supporting refugee children who are exhausted, hungry and terrified.
Since fighting first broke out in Syria in March 2011, the crisis has unfolded to become a large-scale civil war, affecting more than 12 million people across the region, including 5.6 million children. To date, the fighting has tragically claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people.
As the conflict continues to worsen, Save the Children is gravely concerned as the numbers of child refugees continue to rise as conditions worsen inside the war-torn country.
