Much progress has been made over the last couple decades regarding the research of the human brain. Unfortunately, we still do not have a cure for many cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Nevertheless, research has shown that regardless of age, the brain can basically restructure itself when challenged with new stimuli.
Tablets such as the iPad are easy to use for people who aren't familiar with computers. There is no mouse or keyboard to negotiate – everything is right there on the screen. A huge range of applications (apps) are used to do anything from drawing and playing games to taking photos and having a video phone conversation. The apps are designed to not only stimulate the brain with memory exercises, but to give it a break with individual entertainment options and social connections. Research has also shown that tablets can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Dr. Sarphaithuis which is a part of AMSTA (Amsterdam's care institution) aims to set up an IPads Project but does not have the sources and people needed. We are looking for IMCers who would like to be part of this project.
We will have a special encounter with demented elderly including playing games and doing braintrainers on the IPads, listening to music and - of course - having a good coffee. For this day we will provide the IPads. If it becomes a success, it will help Dr. Sarphatihuis to reach more funders and to continue this project.
